The Living Desert Zoo & Gardens

The Living Desert is the Coachella Valley’s most underestimated afternoon. What looks like a zoo on a map turns into something far more immersive once you are inside — 1,200 acres of Sonoran, Mojave, and Chihuahuan desert habitat, home to 450 species of animals and more than 1,600 varieties of desert plants. Giraffes, cheetahs, Arabian oryx, meerkats, and the rare Mexican wolf all live in habitats designed to feel wild, not staged.

The WaTutu African Village is a particular highlight for families, with a zip line, carousel, and splash ground that keeps younger guests busy long after the adults have finished wandering. The botanical gardens alone are worth the visit — particularly in spring, when desert wildflowers turn the pathways into something extraordinary.

Opening at 8am from October through May, mornings are the ideal time before the desert heat climbs. Pair it with lunch at one of the restaurants along Cook Street just minutes away. The Living Desert sits about 15 minutes from La Quinta on the edge of Palm Desert — an easy, satisfying half-day that earns its place on every itinerary.
