Forty-five minutes east and you’re in one of the most otherworldly landscapes in California. Go at sunrise or golden hour. Bring water. Do not underestimate the heat between May and September. The rocks, the silence, the scale of it — there is nothing quite like it, and it is almost always less crowded than visitors expect.
Festival Season in Indio
Coachella. Stagecoach. When the valley becomes the centre of the world in April, La Quinta is the best base you can have. Fifteen minutes from the polo grounds, a private pool to come back to, and a local team handling the logistics — private cars to the gates, late-night returns, restocking between weekends. Book well ahead. The calendar fills fast.
Indian Wells for a Big Night
The BNP Paribas Open runs every March at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The town has the restaurants to match. The Nest has been doing supper club right since 1969 — reserve a table, dress smart, and let the evening go where it wants.
Rancho Mirage for the Afternoon
El Paseo in Palm Desert is the valley’s answer to Rodeo Drive — designer retail, good coffee, and easy parking. Worth a half-morning if that’s your thing. Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage is worth the advance booking for anyone interested in mid-century architecture and extraordinary gardens.
